African Women's Day 2025

Honouring the legacy. Igniting the future.

African Women’s Day marks the anniversary of the first Pan-African Women’s Conference in 1962, a bold moment when women from across the continent stood united for justice, equality, and representation. Today, we don’t just remember their courage, we amplify it.

This year’s official theme is Advancing Social and Economic Justice for African Women through Reparation.

We choose to shine a light on the unstoppable force of African women who are not only breaking barriers but rewriting the rules and advancing justice (social, economic, environment) in their own ways.

From boardrooms to farms, classrooms to climate labs, they are leading Africa’s transformation with brilliance, resilience, and heart.

Accelerating gender equality in Africa’s green transition

This year’s theme is more than a slogan, it’s a movement. It echoes the heartbeat of The Community Revolution, a social enterprise driving sustainable development through education, technology, and grassroots activism.

Here’s how the mission aligns:

  • Empowerment through education: Just as African Women’s Day champions access to learning, The Community Revolution equips women with digital skills, agricultural training, and tools for employability.
  • Green innovation: Women are leading climate-smart solutions. From solar energy to agri-tech, they’re building a greener Africa and The Community Revolution is right beside them.
  • Community-led change: Both the celebration and the enterprise believe in the power of women-led movements to transform communities from the ground up.

Together, they’re not just imagining a better future, they’re building it.

🌟 African women who have redefined possibility

Let’s celebrate the icons and the everyday heroes:

  • Wangari Maathai – Nobel Peace Laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, who proved that environmental activism is a path to peace.
  • Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala – The first African and first woman to lead the WTO, championing global economic equity.
  • Dr. Catherine Nakalembe – Ugandan researcher using satellite data to revolutionize agriculture and food security.
  • Rose Mutiso – Energy expert advocating for inclusive energy access across Africa.
  • Farida Nabourema – Togolese activist fighting for democracy and human rights.

And countless others farmers, coders, educators, entrepreneurs whose names may not be in headlines but whose impact is felt in every village, city, and nation.

🌾 Supporting a regenerative farming changemaker: Maureen Motho

We have nominated Maureen Motho of Ematrio Organic Farms for the Best Organic Farmer Award in Africa. Her work stands as a powerful testament to regenerative agriculture and agroecology’s potential for community empowerment.

Maureen runs Ematrio organic farm in Kiambu, Kenya – where she plants raspberry, wineberries, lettuce, Swiss chard, spinach, Ethiopian kale, spring onions, strawberries among other crops.

🌱 Innovation practices at Ematrio Organic Farms

Maureen has implemented regenerative agriculture gardens that exemplify innovation:

  • Use of cover crops to improve soil structure and increase organic matter
  • Adoption of a Syntropic Agroforestry System, integrating vegetables, cereals, fodder trees, vetiver grass, fruit trees, and timber trees all working symbiotically to form a vibrant food forest with nutrient-sharing microorganisms

👩🏽‍🌾 Community impact

Before training at Ematrio Farm, the local community primarily relied on monocropping. Now, through monthly workshops, farmers have embraced intercropping for better yields and soil health.

The initiative is especially transformative for women and girls, many of whom were previously engaged in labour-intensive, unpaid work. Through Maureen’s training, these women now practice regenerative farming, earn income from their produce, and gain financial independence.

Ematrio Organic Farms has gone a step further by offering training in value addition to curb food wastage. The result? Increased interest and involvement from other community members, multiplying the impact.

Join us in celebrating the work of Maureen by nominating her for the Best Organic Farmer Award!
