The Community Revolution moringa initiative has been developed in partnership with The Ghana Permaculture Institute, a sustainable agriculture focused, community based organisation based in Ghana.
Project overview
The programme aims to address the challenges facing rural communities (smallholder farmers, youths, women ) using the following interventions:
- building technical capacity – training in sustainable agriculture practices
- building processing capacity – value-adding/processing activities
- advocacy for the consumption and cultivation of moringa – improving domestic nutrition and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers
- access to international markets – developing new products; moringa is a high value crop on international markets
Project outcomes
- improved livelihoods for farmers and rural communities (including a source of income for families so that they can afford to send children to school)
- improved nutrition and food security
- improved local value-chains and food systems (ensuring that more value is captured by local communities)
- improve employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, especially for women and youths
- reduced environmental damage from agriculture through the adoption of climate smart sustainable agriculture practices which incorporate moringa
