The role at a glance
You will be vital in designing, building, and maintaining the core technology infrastructure for The Community Revolution, a volunteer-run social enterprise focused on sustainable development. Your work will directly enable our volunteer teams to build and deploy digital services efficiently and securely. This role is crucial in strengthening our digital infrastructure, ensuring reliability, and allowing us to scale our efforts to support underrepresented groups effectively.
Key responsibilities and deliverables
A clear, scannable list of the primary duties:
- Design, implement, and maintain the organisation’s cloud and on-premise infrastructure.
- Build and maintain applications on the platform using cloud-native technologies, for example CNCF containers (LXC, Docker and Podman).
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with the platform infrastructure, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Monitor and analyse platform performance, identifying areas for improvement and optimising for cost-effective operation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align platform architecture with project needs and organisational goals.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the development of platform features.
- Maintain and update key data within Google Sheets and Drive.

Experience and knowledge
- Proven practical experience in a Platform Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, or similar technical role.
- Demonstrable passion for social enterprise, sustainable development, and the volunteer sector.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms and technologies, for example, Kubernetes, Terraform, or Ansible.
- Expertise in Linux operating systems, for example, Debian or Ubuntu.
- Experience with cloud security best practices and compliance regulations.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with remote and cross-functional volunteer teams.
Digital workplace requirements
Basic digital literacy and a reliable internet connection are essential.
Proficiency with modern digital tools for remote collaboration, including:
- Groupware: Email (Gmail) and calendar management.
- Office software: Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) for document creation and data management.
- Communications: Video conferencing and messaging applications.
Desirable skills and experience
Skills that would make a candidate stand out, but are not mandatory.
- Previous experience working in a remote or digitally-focused team.
- Experience with cost-effective infrastructure solutions, for example, Raspberry Pi 5 machines.
- Knowledge of open-source projects, for example, Gitlab or JupyterHub.
- Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
- Experience with WordPress and web development best practices.
