The moringa olifera tree is an incredibly versatile natural resource. Not only for its nutritional benefits once consumed, but also the benefits for your hair and skin from moringa cosmetics.
There are so many options when it comes to cosmetic products. We all want vibrant skin and healthy hair, yet there are alternatives beyond the high street shelves. While we may typically reach for chemically-rich cosmetics, moringa provides a sustainably natural alternative.
This is the second in a three-part series focusing on the health benefits of moringa.
Hair benefits of moringa
Helps produce shiny, free-flowing hair
Like pretty much any hair care product, moringa can help produce shiny hair. That’s largely due to the light texture of moringa oil which is readily absorbed by each strand of hair. After a few applications, you should be amazed at how easily you can comb your hair as moringa acts as a natural hair detangler.
Strengthens and conditions hair
Shiny hair is one thing yet strong, conditioned hair is an altogether more holistic offering. Peptides from moringa seeds have been found to strengthen and condition hair by nurturing hair follicles to prevent fragility and breakage.
Promotes hair growth
If you want more hair then moringa also promotes hair growth. A study by Junlatat and Sripanidkulchai demonstrated that moringa oil stimulates hair growth via the genes in dermal papilla cells and keratinocytes.
Moisturises and hydrates hair
Maintaining a luscious head of hair can take a lot of work. According to Elle’s Beauty Team, moringa oil moisturises and hydrates each hair strand with essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E.
Maintains scalp health
Not only will moringa oil look out for your hair, it will also care for your scalp. That’s down to antimicrobial properties that reduce dandruff and an irritated, itchy scalp. After all, a healthy scalp will promote healthy hair.
Skin benefits of moringa
Promotes healthy skin
You could simply use moringa-based products to help out with your hair but that’s only half of the cosmetic appeal. Packed full of vitamins and nutrients, few natural products can offer such a wide range of skin care benefits.
These benefits originate from:
- vitamin A to reduce wrinkles
- vitamin E to promote wound healing
- vitamin C for enhanced firmness
Each of these benefits is largely down to moringa leaf extract, which propels fibroblast cell production to boost collagen to firm up skin.
Keeps skin hydrated
One particular study in 2013 found that moringa oil acted as a barrier for skin to reduce skin transepidermal water loss while retaining moisture and hydration. Crucially, the oil’s lucrative oleic acid content was found to be safe for all skin types.
Anti-ageing properties
Those same peptides that strengthen and condition hair also form a protective barrier for skin. By keeping out free radicals, the antioxidants in moringa also reduce wrinkles and other skin damage is prevented.
Treats skin conditions
Prevention is better than cure and the antibacterial properties in moringa fight against acne breakouts to promote clear skin. The healing properties of moringa oil also remove blemishes, blackheads, and dark spots to produce healthier, younger looking skin.
By promoting hair growth, maintaining a healthy scalp, and helping produce strong, shiny, free-flowing hair, moringa promises to be a vital component in hair care products. Couple that with its anti-ageing, hydrating, and anti-atopic dermatitis properties for your skin and you can truly feel the benefits for your hair and skin from moringa cosmetics. They may even be the holistic remedy to transform your cosmetic range.
