Every year, on the first Friday of December, Ghana comes alive with vibrant celebrations to honour its farmers and fishers. National Farmers’ Day is a significant event that recognises the invaluable contributions of these hardworking individuals to the nation’s economy and food security.

A brief history

National Farmers’ Day was instituted in 1985 by the Government of Ghana to acknowledge the vital role of farmers in the country’s development. The inaugural celebration was held in Osino in the Eastern Region, a location chosen due to its severe impact from droughts in the early 1980s. The day was established following a remarkable 30% growth in the agricultural sector in 1984, which marked a significant recovery from the devastating droughts of 1982 and 1983.

The importance of farmers

Farmers are the backbone of Ghana’s economy. They provide the food that sustains the nation and contributes significantly to the country’s GDP. Agriculture employs about 44% of the labor force and is a major source of livelihood for many Ghanaians. The sector also plays a crucial role in reducing poverty and ensuring food security.

Celebrations and awards

National Farmers’ Day is marked by various activities, including agricultural fairs, exhibitions, and cultural performances. The highlight of the day is the awards ceremony, where outstanding farmers and fishers are recognised for their hard work and dedication. Awards are given in various categories, including Best Farmer, Best Fisher, and Best Agricultural Extension Officer. The top prize often includes a house, a tractor, and other farming equipment, which significantly boosts the winner’s productivity and livelihood.

Impact on the community

The celebration of National Farmers’ Day has a profound impact on the community. It not only recognises the efforts of farmers but also encourages others to take up farming as a viable and rewarding profession. The event also fosters a sense of community and solidarity among farmers, as they come together to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices.

Looking ahead

As Ghana continues to develop, the importance of agriculture cannot be overstated. National Farmers’ Day serves as a reminder of the critical role that farmers play in the nation’s growth and development. By celebrating and supporting our farmers, we ensure a prosperous and food-secure future for all Ghanaians.

Our work with Ghanaian farmers – Moringa initiative

The Moringa Initiative has had a transformative impact on farmers and rural communities. By partnering with the Ghana Permaculture Institute, we are supporting their efforts to empower farmers to cultivate moringa, a superfood known for its high nutritional value. The existing work and impact achieved by the Ghana Permaculture Institute have increased income for farmers and improved the overall health and well-being of the community. Our initiative aims to scale up this impact by applying technology to enhance training, provide organic seeds, and guarantee markets. Together, we are helping over 5,000 small farmers kickstart their moringa farms, boosting local economies and improving nutrition and food security.

We recently hosted a wellness webinar titled “The Impact of Nutrition on Non-Communicable Diseases,” in partnership with Saffron Wellness. The webinar featured esteemed speakers who shared valuable insights on how moringa and other nutritious foods can help manage and prevent non-communicable diseases. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the critical role nutrition plays in maintaining health and preventing chronic illnesses.
