Radio has long been a powerful tool for storytelling, information sharing, and mobilising communities. In a world grappling with the urgent challenges of climate change, World Radio Day 2025 takes on even greater significance.
This year’s theme, “Radio and Climate Change,” focuses on empowering radio stations to enhance their journalistic coverage of one of our time’s most pressing global crises.
At The Community Revolution, we recognise the power of media in driving awareness, education, and action toward sustainability. As we celebrate World Radio Day, we reaffirm our commitment to using communication for positive change.

Brief history of radio
World Radio Day coincides with the anniversary of UN Radio (first broadcast February 13th, 1946), and the world’s first radio broadcast transmission in history was made in 1897 by Guglielmo Marconi.
Radio communication is important not only for fostering cohesive communities, but is also critical in times of crisis (e.g. disaster response and for peace keeping activities).
The following video gives a brief history of World Radio Day.
Radio as a tool for climate action
Radio is critical in climate education and advocacy, from extreme weather events to environmental policies. Unlike digital platforms that require internet access, radio remains the most accessible medium worldwide, reaching remote communities that may otherwise be excluded from critical climate conversations.
Here are some ways radio helps in the fight for climate change;
Raising awareness on climate issues
Radio stations worldwide serve as first responders in climate communication, ensuring that people, especially in vulnerable regions, receive accurate and timely information about climate-related issues.
From deforestation in the Amazon to rising sea levels in island nations, radio provides a space for local and indigenous communities to share their stories and shed light on the human impact of climate change.

Early warning systems and disaster preparedness
As climate change intensifies, natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires have become more frequent. Radio is a lifeline in these moments, delivering life-saving information on evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and safety measures.
In countries like Bangladesh, where cyclones are a recurring threat, community radio stations have proven instrumental in reducing casualties by broadcasting real-time warnings.

Empowering local and Indigenous voices
Climate change disproportionately affects marginalised and indigenous communities. However, these communities often hold invaluable knowledge about sustainable living and environmental conservation. These voices can reach policymakers, ecological activists, and global audiences through radio, advocating for climate justice and inclusive environmental policies.

Our commitment to climate awareness
At The Community Revolution, our core values of empowerment, sustainability, and community engagement, align perfectly with the mission of World Radio Day 2025.
We believe in leveraging media to foster informed and resilient communities in the fight against climate change.
Empowerment through information
We support using radio as an educational tool, ensuring that communities have access to accurate climate data, best practices in sustainability, and practical solutions for adaptation.
Engaging communities for collective impact
We recognise that authentic climate action requires collective effort. We support platforms that amplify climate solutions and mobilise action by fostering partnerships with local media, grassroots organisations, and environmental experts.
Farm Radio is one such initiative that advocates for the use of radio in rural communities.
How you can get involved
Support local climate radio programs – Tune into community radio stations prioritising climate reporting. Your engagement helps sustain these vital information channels.
Use your voice – Whether through podcasts, social media, or local radio, speak up about climate issues affecting your community. Awareness is the first step toward action.
Take action in your daily life – Small changes like reducing plastic use, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable businesses can contribute to the larger fight against climate change.
