Join us for an enlightening webinar on Wednesday 25th June at 2pm (BST) in celebration of Sustainable Gastronomy Day 2025.
Sustainable Gastronomy Day is held on 18th June each year in line with Sustainable Gastronomy Week, 16-20th June.
We are celebrating this year by spotlighting thought leaders and key stakeholders in the field of Sustainable Gastronomy.
What is Sustainable Gastronomy?
Gastronomy refers to the art of food, whether that be the style of cooking from a region or local foods and cuisine. It is an expression of the world’s natural and cultural diversity.
Sustainability brings into focus the idea that something is done in a way that avoids wasting natural resources and that can be continued into the future without being detrimental to our environment or health. This can include agriculture, fishing or even food preparation techniques.
Sustainable gastronomy means cuisine that considers the origins of ingredients, how produce is grown and how it gets to markets and onto our plates.

Sustainable food systems
Some of the key issues relating to sustainable food systems include:
- Environmental damage from conventional agricultural production methods: artificial fertilisers/inputs (as opposed to sustainable agriculture/permaculture/agroecology) and how this affects climate change/climate justice
- Poor nutritional health: moving away from indigenous foods has seen an increase in uptake of processed foods causing NCDs (noncommunicable diseases) such as obesity and diabetes.
- Low agricultural productivity: partly resulting from poor agricultural methods and how sustainable agriculture can help.
- Food sovereignty: reliance on foreign imports despite the propensity of raw produce within the country (partly down to poor infrastructure and low amounts of value addition/food preservation)
- Low value addition in food systems: resulting in lower economic outcomes for rural communities and smallholdings.
