The African Day of School Feeding 2025 commemorates the 10th year of enhancing the health and nutrition of children. Highlighting the vital role of nutritious meals in supporting children’s education, health, and economic prospects.
Millions of students across Africa rely on school feeding programmes for daily nourishment, helping them to stay focused and thrive academically.
This day is a reminder of the power of home-grown food programmes in transforming lives and strengthening communities.

Why school feeding matters
School meals play a vital role in a child’s growth, education, and overall well-being. For millions of children across Africa, these meals are more than just nourishment, they are a lifeline. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), over 65 million schoolchildren in Africa benefit from school feeding programmes.
Studies show that well-fed students have higher attendance rates, improved concentration, and better academic performance. The World Food Programme’s School Meals Coalition Database provides comprehensive data on the impact of school feeding programs in Africa, including statistics on the number of children benefiting from these initiatives.
Home-grown school feeding programmes are an investment in the future. They support local farmers, strengthen economies, and encourage community development. With proper nutrition, children are better equipped to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future.

The Community Revolution’s commitment to school feeding
The Community Revolution believes that no child should go to school hungry. Our projects focus on sustainable, locally driven solutions that ensure children receive the nutrition they need. We work closely with communities, farmers, schools, and policymakers to create long-term impact through school feeding initiatives.
Projects driving change
The Community Revolution promotes the health benefits of moringa by educating communities on its nutritional value and supporting African farmers in cultivating and selling moringa sustainably.
Sustainable home-grown school feeding programmes create lasting benefits for children, families, and communities. The Community Revolution leads initiatives that improve nutrition, support local farmers, and promote self-sufficiency. These projects ensure that students receive healthy meals while learning about sustainable food systems.
The Moringa Initiative: supercharging nutrition
Moringa is often called a “miracle tree” due to its exceptional nutritional value. It contains:
- Seven times more vitamin C than oranges
- Four times more calcium than milk
- Three times more potassium than bananas
- Twice the protein of yoghurt
The nutritional benefits of Moringa oleifera include its high vitamin and mineral content.
Through our Moringa Initiative (in Ghana) we help schools incorporate moringa into meals to boost students’ diets with essential micronutrients (e.g. vitamins and minerals). This project not only enhances children’s health but also promotes the cultivation of moringa by local farmers, creating a sustainable food source.

The African SCENe: education for sustainable development
Education and sustainability go hand in hand. The African SCENe feasibility study held in Kenya, is an example of our wider CERC-DL initiative, where we worked to identify how to provide (and finance) clean community energy for the purpose of facilitating modern education and training opportunities to marginalised communities.
The scope of the African SCENe project included empowering schools to maintain the health of their students by:
- Providing resources and training to establish school gardens
- Teaching students about sustainable agriculture
- Encouraging schools to source ingredients locally
Schools adopting these practices report significant improvements in student nutrition and academic success. Teaching children about food production helps create a generation that values sustainable living and food security.

Our commitment to the African Day of School Feeding
The African Day of School Feeding aligns with The Community Revolution’s core values of sustainability, education, and nutrition. Our initiatives, including the Moringa Initiative and the African SCENe projects, directly support school feeding by improving nutrition, promoting local agriculture, and fostering self-sufficiency.
Through these projects, we empower communities with sustainable solutions to hunger, malnutrition and improved outcomes in not only education, but in economics and general livelihoods.
